Dreaming of Sticks and String
A few years ago, I took almost all of my breaks at work at a small yarn shop. Those ladies instilled a passion inside me! I’m not exactly the yarn snob, but I can really appreciate a wonderful yarn.
I’m a small knitter.
Meaning I knit smaller items that are nearly instant gratification. I love hats, fingerless mittens and especially dishcloths. It feels wonderful to be washing dishes, and wiping the table with a wonderfully hand knit dishcloth. Just the thought makes me want to run out to my knitting storage bin and grab some sticks and string.
My mother in law taught me how to crochet, only the bare basics. Its just not nearly as fulfilling to me as knitting, but its still a stick and string.
Holding a pair of ebony circular needles, and cashmere yarn is such a divine feeling! It gives me shivers!
Knitting is a portable project.
I’ve knit in the doctor’s office, and at football practice. Knitting while watching movies is also a great way to get through a project. Yes you can learn to knit without even looking at your sticks and string.
If you hurry, you can knit something special for Christmas, or even Thanksgiving. I’ll be on the lookout for wonderful knitting patterns this year. My husband’s bald head may need something to warm it up this year too! Oh the possibilities!

A couple days ago I posted on Facebook that it felt like I had porcupine eggs in my throat. Then things went downhill from there.
My throat is better, but I decided to get back on my Zyrtec for the allergies and added Mucinex to help with all of that. Last night I was miserable. Not as much congestion, so I thought it may be the flu.
This morning the body aches are so much better, but major congestion and I was nearly out of TP and completely out of tissues.
I got to thinking about the rag basket in my laundry room that’s been untouched forever. I have cut up t-shirts and things like that in there. I popped them in the washer for a short cycle and they are now in the dryer. I’m going to turn some of those rags into hankies.
My washer has a sanitize setting, and my dryer has an antibacterial setting. Those will certainly be used on my hankies when I wash them over the next few days. It does take longer for the wash, but I will know that whatever is coming out of my head will be dead when those cycles are over.
My bedding is going in next, just for my comfort.
I’m sipping on Tomato Tea for the congestion, and drinking a lot of water today also. I read that ACV will help to thin the mucous, so I’ll try that…it can’t hurt.
What are your favorite home remedies for sinus congestion?
Missing in Action: Part 8,985,623
Here lately I’ve been a bit overwhelmed with life. My husband moved to Iowa for work, then came back about 2 weeks later because his mom was having a 3rd emergency surgery. She just got home yesterday after 9 days, 3 hospitals, 2 surgeons and a partridge in a pear tree.
Today I’m shipping my husband back to Iowa. Hopefully things will work out at work so that he will be home for 5 days a month starting in November. The job looks like it will last through at least Christmas and possibly for the next year.
I have a few prayer requests today:
- 1. Pray for my mother in law’s complete recovery. She has been through a lot both physically and mentally.
- 2. Pray for my husband’s safe return to Iowa today.
- 3. Pray that we find sufficient work for my husband at home.
I really appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers to those of you who have known what’s going on. To those of you who didn’t, I apologize for not letting you know sooner.
On a related note:
If you are interested in writing a guest post for me, please contact me via the contact form. I would love to run a few guest posts to fill in some gaps of my calendar while I’m helping with my mother in law. Topics that I’m looking for will include homemaking, organizing, decluttering ideas, cooking or baking, cleaning and anything that will help a family run a bit smoother. We are all looking for things that will help simplify our lives, and that’s what I would like to start focusing on here at Polka Spot Farm. If you have a topic that you are unsure about, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Menu Plan Monday
I’m changing my eating habits, slowly but surely. Last week I had real cheese and bacon and still came in under my calorie goal! Yay!
For the most part my kids were not eating at home last week, so this week may be a bit more challenging. As my fitness level changes, along with my weight my calorie goals for the day will be changing too. Lately I’ve been burning anywhere from 300-500 calories a day. That really changes what I eat. So this is a vague plan for the week that will be tweaked as I go.
- Monday: Grilled hamburger, (no bun) salad, brown rice
- Tuesday: Veggie Soup, homemade bread
- Wednesday: Baked Chicken and Green Beans, brown rice
- Thursday: Grilled Chicken, Salad, Kid’s choice of Veggies
- Friday: Homemade Pizza

Menu Plan Monday
This week I’m making a few changes to my menu making it a bit more healthy. I certainly may need help deciding on some healthy food choices, my southern cooking may need to be changed a lot! Babysteps, right?
Last week seems like a whirlwind of emotions and events. My darling husband left for Iowa (about 1,000 miles away) for work. Not knowing how long he will be gone makes things tough, but I decided to make a few changes while my husband is gone.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful for him to come home to a healthier, happier and maybe even sexier wife?! So I decided to pledge to the Sistahood from Mamavation. I will be blogging more on that later at Eat Sweat Lose if you’d like to follow along.
So this is my proposed menu for the week (it may change, do you have suggestions)
- Monday: Grilled Chicken, Salad, brown rice
- Tuesday: Homemade Vegetable Beef Soup
- Wednesday: Grilled Talapia, mixed veggies and brown rice
- Thursday: Leftovers
- Friday: Spaghetti (with some healthy ingredients)
My two goals for this week:
- Drink 100 ounces of water daily
- Get at least 30 minutes of exercise in daily.

Christmas Wish List: PlayStation Move
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of PlayStation(R) Move. All opinions are 100% mine.
My son is already asking for a PlayStation3 so why not upgrade to the PlayStation(R)MOVE? He hasn't seen this that I know of, but at 13 who knows what he's seen, right?
Everyone is familiar with the Wii, right? I love my Wii! This is something very similar, but only by a different company.
You can even get that MOVE bundle package for your existing PlayStation3 for only $99. Too bad we don't already have one of those. I'll be shopping for my son soon enough it seems.
Our family loves playing video games as a family activity. We have full out competitions with each other.
I know that Gran Turismo® 5
will be one of the first games we would get my 13 year old. He's already said something about it over the past few weeks.
There's a lot of cool games, I personally would like to try Tumble. It seems more like my style, especially since I'm totally addicted to Tetris at the moment!
Are you making your Christmas wish list yet? As you can see, we are on our way to getting ours written out. I can't wait to share more of our families picks for this holiday season.
